Practicing Wellness While You Stay at Home

With so many people staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the realization is settling in about the realities of not traveling to work. While the good news for some is that they no longer have to worry about long commutes or having to dress up, the downside is that being cooped up at home has its disadvantages. That’s why practicing wellness while you stay at home is so important.

Establishing Routines

For millions of people, their daily routines have been changed considerably by the coronavirus. In order to get on with your day, you will need to establish new routines to help you cope with the situation at hand. It’s going to take a little time, but the effort you put into it will be worth it.

Take 15 Minutes to Get Ready: One of the best ways to adjust to the new conditions is taking 15 minutes to get oriented. Take this time to do the following:

  • Appreciate what you have
  • Take a few deep breaths
  • Stretch and do a basic warmup

By looking around and appreciating what you have in your life, it will put things into perspective. It only takes a few minutes to go over what is important. You will need to use that time wisely at the beginning of your day.

The next step is taking a few deep breaths. This will help you reduce any stress that you are feeling. By engaging in a few deep, relaxing breaths you can diminish any anxiety present. A simple method is the following:

  • Breath in on a count of four
  • Hold your breath for a count of seven
  • Breath out on a count of eight
  • Repeat three to four times at least three times a day

Finally, do a good stretch to feel you body as it wakes up and gets ready for your day. You can keep things simple with a few good stretches. Or you can engage in more formal techniques such as yoga or qi gong. This is a series of movements that helps you feel your body, help you become more aware, and gets you ready for your day.

Proper Nutrition

One issue that many people are facing is their lack of a disciplined diet. This is certainly understandable at the beginning since it may seem like you are on vacation. But expanding your belly while reducing your fitness is going to become a bigger problem as time goes by.:

  • Eat healthy
  • Focus on fruits and vegetables
  • Reduce intake of foods with refined sugars, unhealthy fats, and fast carbs
  • Drink plenty of water

If you are working from home, put something near your computer that reminds of being at the office. This will help you separate work from home. Stay focused on your daily activities by creating a schedule. And be grateful for others by being mindful of their situation as well.

Until things return to normal, practicing wellness while you stay at home will be paramount. It will not only protect your health today, but it will prepare you for going back to normalcy.
